Staré Město (the Old Town) and Malá Strana (the Lesser Town, below the castle) hold almost everything a first visit wants, and are priced for it. Vinohrady, east of the centre, is where the city becomes residential and the restaurants get cheaper and better. Žižkov, next to it, has the reputation for pubs and the least polished streets of the four.
The practical version: stay or eat one tram stop beyond where the crowd stops walking, and the same evening costs noticeably less. Prague's centre is small enough that "further out" still means ten minutes.
